About this tradition
Between roughly 1790 and 1850 painters across the German lands and Britain turned from daylight to the night. Moonlit ruins, fires at the edge of a forest, the old story of the witches' gathering on the mountain — subjects that an earlier century had treated as decoration or comedy — became serious pictures, painted with the same care as a portrait or an altarpiece. The folklore was old. The manner was new: a cold moon and a warm fire held in one composition, the figure caught between the two lights, and the dark painted as a place with weather and depth rather than as an absence of paint.
That manner is what this collection borrows. Two lights and no others: embers from below, warming the face and chest, and the moon from behind, laying a thin cold edge along the far side of the sitter. Everything else sinks into dark, and the darks are full of form — bark, smoke, dry leaves, the rim of the brazier. It suits a cat with almost no persuasion. The tradition wants a sitter who belongs to the night rather than fearing it, who looks back over the fire as if the viewer were the one who had wandered in, and that is simply how a cat looks at anyone after dark.

- Yes. Your portrait is rendered by studio software in the visual style of the old masters, then printed on cotton-blend canvas. Nobody paints it by hand, and we say so plainly because it is what you are buying.
- Will it look like my actual pet?
- That is the whole job. The rendering follows the coat, markings, ear set and expression in your photograph. You see the result before paying, so if it does not look like them you have lost nothing.
- What if my photo is not very good?
- Most commissions begin with an ordinary phone snapshot. Daylight and a clear view of the face help most; blur, grain and a cluttered background rarely matter. Older photographs of pets who have passed are often the least technically good and among the most worth commissioning.
- Can you do my breed, my senior, my rescue with one ear?
- Every breed, every age, every characterful detail. The specific things that make them recognisable are the things worth rendering.
