About this tradition
Between roughly 1890 and 1930 the illustrated book was the finest thing most households owned. Cheaper colour printing had arrived at exactly the moment a generation of extraordinary draughtsmen came of age, and publishers answered with the gift annual: heavy paper, tipped-in colour plates, and a standard of drawing that has not been bettered since. Those artists took the old autumn stories seriously — the churchyard, the carved lantern, the black cat, the bare tree with too much character in its branches — and gave the season the look it has carried ever since.
The technique is what makes these pictures hold. The whole image is built first in ink: hatching, cross-hatching and stipple, every form modelled in line rather than filled with flat tone, so the drawing survives whatever colour arrives later. Then thin transparent washes are laid over the top, never enough to hide the line beneath. It is a slow way to work and an unforgiving one, and it is why a face drawn this way still reads as a particular individual rather than a type. It suits an animal that commits entirely to the occasion and is not remotely self-conscious about it — a dog beside a lantern, a cat on the wall behind, both equally in earnest.

- Is this AI?
- Yes. Your portrait is rendered by studio software in the visual style of the old masters, then printed on cotton-blend canvas. Nobody paints it by hand, and we say so plainly because it is what you are buying.
- Will it look like my actual pet?
- That is the whole job. The rendering follows the coat, markings, ear set and expression in your photograph. You see the result before paying, so if it does not look like them you have lost nothing.
- What if my photo is not very good?
- Most commissions begin with an ordinary phone snapshot. Daylight and a clear view of the face help most; blur, grain and a cluttered background rarely matter. Older photographs of pets who have passed are often the least technically good and among the most worth commissioning.
- Can you do my breed, my senior, my rescue with one ear?
- Every breed, every age, every characterful detail. The specific things that make them recognisable are the things worth rendering.
- What if I have more than one pet?
