Cat portraits for every coat, from tabby to tuxedo

With cats, the coat does most of the talking. Any tradition here works for any cat: each one is rendered for whichever cat is in your photograph. The pairings below are examples of looks that land especially well, not a guide to what suits your cat.

Black. A black cat against the gold arch and green vines of the Art Nouveau looks striking.

Grey. A grey cat suits the cool steel and quiet light of the Florentine Ducal, the lace collar of the Dutch Golden Age, and the soft linework of the Edo Period.

Ginger and tabby. A ginger tabby glows against the warm gold of the Pharaonic Dynastic and the deep reds and stained glass of the Gothic Revival, and its orange stripes stand out against the navy jacket and pale capsule of the Apollo Program. A silver tabby looks entirely at ease in a toga on a Roman Imperial throne.

Tortoiseshell. Coats with that many patches look at home in the richly dressed traditions, and a tortoiseshell as a Florentine duke in crimson and blue shows why.

Tuxedo. A tuxedo cat arrives already in formal dress, and carries the kimono and sword of the Edo Period as easily as the black leather of the Nineties Underground.

Pedigree, rescue or the cat who simply moved in, a custom cat portrait starts from your cat's own markings, so choose the tradition you like best.

Photographing your cat for a portrait

  • Wait for a still moment. A cat settled on a windowsill gives a sharper photo than one you call over. Calm and awake is ideal.
  • Catch the light in their eyes. Turn them toward a window so each eye shows a small bright reflection. That spark carries much of the likeness.
  • Keep the whiskers sharp. Get close enough for whiskers and ear tufts to show clearly, and leave the tips of the ears in the frame.
  • Skip the flash. A flash turns a cat's eyes into glowing discs and flattens the coat. Daylight at their eye level is better.
How to photograph your pet

A cat portrait as a gift

For a new kitten, a portrait from the first weeks remembers how small they once were. For a birthday or an adoption anniversary, it suits the friend whose cat quietly runs the house. For a cat who has died, a memorial portrait can begin from whatever photograph you have. And as an easy extra, your portrait can also come on a phone case. Check which phone they use first (it's in their phone's settings): each case is made for one model.
