About this tradition
The Gothic Revival was an argument before it was a style. From the 1840s British architects, critics and designers set out to recover a medieval sensibility they believed the industrial century had mislaid — pointed arches, honest materials, deep saturated colour, and interiors lit by candle and stained glass rather than by daylight. Within a generation it had reshaped churches, town halls and drawing rooms across Britain.
Painting followed the rooms. The Pre-Raphaelites, founded in 1848 into the same medievalising current, worked in jewel colour laid on a bright wet ground, with the patience of the craftsman visible in every detail — though their own light was famously flat and shadowless. The single candle here belongs to the rooms rather than to that school: a Gothic Revival interior was lit by flame and coloured glass, and a face in one is lit from a single side because that is where the candle stood. This collection borrows both — not a documented school of portraiture, but the manner in which figures were rendered in these rooms. It suits a cat unreasonably well: the tradition wants a sitter who holds still, looks faintly disapproving of the century, and declines to explain itself.

- Is this AI?
- Yes. Your portrait is rendered by studio software in the visual style of the old masters, then printed on cotton-blend canvas. Nobody paints it by hand, and we say so plainly because it is what you are buying.
- Will it look like my actual pet?
- That is the whole job. The rendering follows the coat, markings, ear set and expression in your photograph. You see the result before paying, so if it does not look like them you have lost nothing.
- What if my photo is not very good?
- Most commissions begin with an ordinary phone snapshot. Daylight and a clear view of the face help most; blur, grain and a cluttered background rarely matter. Older photographs of pets who have passed are often the least technically good and among the most worth commissioning.
- Can you do my breed, my senior, my rescue with one ear?
- Every breed, every age, every characterful detail. The specific things that make them recognisable are the things worth rendering.
- What if I have more than one pet?
