What Size Canvas for Above a Couch or Mantel
Most art is hung too small. There is a rule designers use for this, it takes one measurement, and it is the difference between a portrait that anchors a wall and one that floats on it.
The rule
Measure the furniture the portrait will hang above, then aim for artwork spanning roughly two-thirds of that width — anywhere from 60 to 75 per cent looks deliberate. Narrower than that and the piece reads as an afterthought, however good it is. This is a convention rather than a law, and a wall with its own logic can overrule it, but it is the proportion most rooms are unconsciously judged against.

Where a single canvas will not reach
Worth being straight about this: above anything wider than an armchair, one canvas — including our largest — is narrower than the rule wants. That is not a reason to buy the biggest size and hope. It is why the table above recommends a pair for a sofa, a bed or a mantel, and a pair means two commissions. Hung with a hand's width between them, two portraits read as one piece and cover the span properly. If you would rather hang one, hang it anyway; it will simply sit modestly on the wall rather than commanding it.
How high to hang it
Centre the portrait about 57 inches from the floor, which is roughly gallery eye level, and leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. Hung higher than that it drifts away from the sofa and stops belonging to it.
