A custom dog portrait for every breed
Any tradition here works for any dog. Each one is rendered for whichever dog is in your photograph, so a beagle can be an emperor and a whippet can be an astronaut. The pairings below are only examples of looks that land especially well. They are never a rule about which dog belongs where.
Big, warm coats, for example. A golden retriever wears the ermine and gold chain of the Tudor Court especially well, and the same coat glows under the laurel wreath of the Roman Imperial. A husky's mask and pale eyes stand out against the swirling yellows and greens of the Post-Impressionist tradition. A spaniel's long, feathered ears suit the polished armour and dark ground of the Tudor Court.
Short coats and strong outlines, for example. A whippet sits beautifully inside the gold arch of the Art Nouveau. A French bulldog's ears and square chest hold their own under a marshal's bicorne in the Napoleonic Campaign, and a black Frenchie reads richly against the candlelit stone of the Gothic Revival. A wire-coated terrier looks entirely at home among the globes and maps of the Victorian Expedition.
Long faces, fox faces and everything between, for example. A dachshund, smooth or long-haired, suits the white ruff and dark study of the Dutch Golden Age. A shiba inu's fox face looks striking in a Florentine duke's armour.
Mixed breeds, rescues, seniors and dogs with one ear up are all welcome. A dog portrait from your photo starts from your dog, not from a breed standard, so choose the tradition you like best.

- Get down to eye level. Kneel so the camera is level with their eyes; a photo taken from standing height looks down on them and shortens the face.
- Give a dark coat daylight. Black and deep-brown coats lose their detail under a lamp. Take the photo near a window during the day, with the light in front of your dog rather than behind.
- Keep the ears in the picture. Pricked, folded or one of each, ears are a large part of the likeness.
- One dog at a time. One dog per photograph works best.
- Hold a treat above the lens. It usually earns a steady look.
A dog portrait as a gift
A custom dog portrait makes a good birthday gift for someone whose dog is the centre of the house, or a new puppy's first weeks home, while they are still small enough to carry. For a dog who has died, a memorial portrait can begin from an older photograph, even a blurred one. Whatever the occasion, the proof is free, so you can see the portrait before you decide to give it.
