About this tradition
The last two decades of the nineteenth century were the high-water mark of the Salon portrait: a polished, expensive manner in which the darks were laid as lacquer, the highlights placed like jewellery, and the sitter shown at close range in a room that cost as much as the picture. It was also the age of Decadence — of hothouse flowers, drawn curtains, and a fashionable taste for the nocturnal — and in 1897 it produced the vampire as the world still knows him: a figure of the drawing room rather than the crypt, received after dark, immaculately dressed.
This collection renders the two together. The technique is the Salon's — high finish, lacquered black and oxblood, one warm lamp low on one side and the cold moon through a tall window on the other — and the sitter is the Decadent host: a standing collar rising behind the head, a garnet, lilies past their best, a hand mirror laid face-down. Nothing is bared and nothing bleeds; the effect is luxury with the lights down. It suits a cat with unreasonable ease. An animal that receives visitors on its own terms, keeps its own hours, and regards daylight as a personal inconvenience was already living the part.

- Is this AI?
- Yes. Your portrait is rendered by studio software in the visual style of the old masters, then printed on cotton-blend canvas. Nobody paints it by hand, and we say so plainly because it is what you are buying.
- Will it look like my actual pet?
- That is the whole job. The rendering follows the coat, markings, ear set and expression in your photograph. You see the result before paying, so if it does not look like them you have lost nothing.
- What if my photo is not very good?
- Most commissions begin with an ordinary phone snapshot. Daylight and a clear view of the face help most; blur, grain and a cluttered background rarely matter. Older photographs of pets who have passed are often the least technically good and among the most worth commissioning.
- Can you do my breed, my senior, my rescue with one ear?
- Every breed, every age, every characterful detail. The specific things that make them recognisable are the things worth rendering.
