About this tradition
NASA's official crew portraits of the 1960s were a genre with rules as fixed as any court painter's: neutral grey ground, frontal pose, flight suit, mission patch at the breast, a model of the spacecraft placed on the shelf behind. They were made to be reproduced in newspapers, so they favour clarity and steadiness over atmosphere.
The flatness is what makes it work here. There is no drama in the lighting and no story in the background — just a subject looking directly out, apparently unfazed by what they are about to be strapped to. Applied to a dog it is very close to a passport photograph taken by someone who takes the assignment extremely seriously.

- Is this AI?
- Yes. Your portrait is rendered by studio software in the visual style of the old masters, then printed on cotton-blend canvas. Nobody paints it by hand, and we say so plainly because it is what you are buying.
- Will it look like my actual pet?
- That is the whole job. The rendering follows the coat, markings, ear set and expression in your photograph. You see the result before paying, so if it does not look like them you have lost nothing.
- What if my photo is not very good?
- Most commissions begin with an ordinary phone snapshot. Daylight and a clear view of the face help most; blur, grain and a cluttered background rarely matter. Older photographs of pets who have passed are often the least technically good and among the most worth commissioning.
- Can you do my breed, my senior, my rescue with one ear?
